Toronto Tree Scans

Toronto Tree Scans cover image

2026

Recent student work from ARC465: Tools for Close Observation at the Daniels Faculty. Working in groups, students used photogrammetry and point cloud tools to study mature street trees across Toronto.

For this assignment, each group focused on a single tree species and identified two large specimens to visit, photograph and 3D scan. Working from the Toronto Street Tree database and other sources, the aim was to move past a quick image of the tree and become more familiar with its structure, reach and habits. One scanned tree was used to produce a pair of plain drawings. The other became a more analytical set layered with notes, measurements and observations drawn from close study of the point cloud. Alongside these, students also mapped something of their species across the city. The work shown here is a sample from that recent assignment and from a seminar built around measurement, observation, and the value of looking closely.

All images shown are the work of students who participated in this Winter 2026 course.
