Using Trees Studio

2022-24

Projects undertaken by students working with me in the Using Trees thesis studio at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design.

During my two-year Emerging Architect Fellowship at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty I supervised two groups of final year MArch students undertaking their thesis. In joining the Using Trees Studio, students were prompted to identify projects both unusual and ecological, and somehow concerned with wood and other products of trees.

A wide range emerged over the two cycles. From tool and process development, to structure and building design, to mapping out larger industries and landscape networks. The workshop staff at Daniels were essential to the success of each project, and the studio received constant support and welcome from our friends at Haliburton Forest. Maria and Nicholas constantly turned up as reviewers for us.

All images are the work of students in the group. Some have been captured by Harry Choi and Richard Ashman. Cover and thumbnail images of Zhenxiao Yang’s work.
